Description
Why We Stay: What It Really Takes To Build A Sustainable Interpreting Career
What does it really take to build a long, healthy and fulfilling career as an Auslan interpreter without burning out or losing the joy of interpreting along the way?
This conversation first began during the final panel at the ASLITA National Conference (ANC) on 11 October 2026 in Geelong, Victoria. Now, AIMS is bringing it back for an extended, more interactive online discussion!
Join experienced Auslan interpreters with a combined 137 years of experience as they share honest reflections on the highs and lows of interpreting, the challenges they’ve faced, what has kept them going and what they wish they’d known when they first started.
We’ll explore burnout, boundaries, workplace challenges, wellbeing, career longevity and practical strategies for not just surviving, but thriving in this profession.

What to Expect
90 Minute Interactive Panel
An extended discussion with plenty of time for audience Q&A. We’ll also use Mentimeter so everyone can contribute their thoughts, experiences and reflections throughout the session.
30 Minute Breakout Rooms
After the panel, join smaller breakout rooms with individual panellists to ask more questions, share experiences and network with colleagues in a relaxed, supportive environment.
Whether you’re a student, a newer interpreter or someone who’s been interpreting for decades, this conversation is for you.
Because a sustainable interpreting career isn’t just about how long we stay. It’s about how we stay, remaining healthy, fulfilled, competent and still finding joy in what we do. Why? Because when we support interpreters, the Deaf community gets better access.
