Wicked Conversations
Description
While practice doesn't make perfect, it helps us to talk.
The Invitation
In a world that is increasing fast and fractured it's hard to have an authentic conversation. Especially if it's difficult! Many of us find ourselves caught between two unhelpful extremes: retreating into polite silence to preserve comfort, or getting pulled into reactive debates that burn bridges and leave everyone feeling misunderstood.
Avoiding difficult conversations doesn't help anyone. It just erodes trust and entrenches separation.
We're hosting Wicked Conversation to help us step beyond what stops us. It is a live laboratory where we build the relational muscle needed to stay present, curious, and grounded—even when the stakes feel high.
Why Practice?
Most of us know what we ought to do during a tense interaction—listen more, pause, stay open. Yet when real disagreement arises, our nervous systems kick into fight, flight, or freeze. In those moments, intellectual knowledge vanishes, and our protective habits take over.
Having a difficult conversation is not an intellectual concept; it is an embodied skill. Much like learning an instrument or a sport, you cannot build reflex, stamina, and distress tolerance simply by reading about it. Regular, low-stakes rehearsal builds muscle memory so that when high-stakes moments arise in daily life, we have something steady to rely on.
Why a Practice Community?
We cannot learn relational agility in isolation. A practice community provides a container with shared agreements, generous patience, and peer feedback. It offers a safe environment to try out new approaches, stumble gracefully, unpack what happened, and learn alongside others who share the same commitment to authentic connection.
What We Will Focus On
Across our sessions, we work with practical frameworks drawn from mediation, conflict resolution, and authentic dialogue to develop concrete capacities:
Down-Regulating the Nervous System: Learning to recognise somatic stress signals and stay regulated in the heat of a moment.
Setting Clear Intentions: Entering conversations with clarity about what you are actually there to explore.
Entering the Conversation Cleanly: How to raise sensitive or loaded topics without immediately putting others on the defensive.
Reflective Listening & "Looping": Moving beyond waiting for your turn to speak. Practicing active reflection so the other person genuinely feels heard.
Uncovering Needs and Values: Looking beneath surface positions and arguments to identify the underlying human needs, vulnerabilities, and values driving the conversation.
What You Can Expect
By showing up to practice regularly within this community, you will cultivate:
Greater Ease and Willingness: A noticeable reduction in dread or avoidance when tough topics arise with family, colleagues, neighbours, or community members.
Increased Distress Tolerance: The capacity to sit with awkwardness, uncertainty, and disagreement without needing to fix, withdraw, or escalate immediately. Sarah Wilson calls this 'joyful discomfort'!
Practical, Transferable Skills: Practical tools you can bring directly into your personal and professional relationships.
A Grounded Sense of Community: Real connection with peers who are equally dedicated to crossing divides and fostering social resilience.
Who This Is For
This space is open to anyone who wants to communicate more thoughtfully and courageously, navigate sensitive personal, political, or ecological topics with loved ones without severing connection or who wants simply to step beyond the echo chambers.
No prior background in conflict resolution or communication training is required—only curiosity and a willingness to engage.
