Choosing the Right AI Model for Wildlife Monitoring: Insights from WildObs

The Wildlife Observatory of Australia - WildObs - brings together state-of-the-art computer vision models to support wildlife monitoring across Australia, but choosing the right model for your dataset can be challenging.

In this webinar, we walk through how different models, ranging from national-scale to region- and habitat-specific, perform under real-world conditions, and what that means for your ecological workflows.

Through a practical case study, we compare model outputs on a real dataset and highlight key considerations such as species representation, habitat bias, and confidence scores.

Who is this webinar for?

This session is designed for ecologists and practitioners, focusing on how to interpret model results, understand their limitations, and make informed decisions about which model best suits your monitoring goals. 

The practical example may require some coding experience (Python) to make modifications, but all scripts and notebooks are provided, so no prior knowledge is essential to attend. Some familiarity with the Camtrap DP data standard will be helpful, and we recommend attending the prior session WildObs Database: From Field to Discovery.

This webinar will be relevant to people working in national, state, and local government environmental departments, environmental groups (NGOs, academics, or other managers), as well as anyone using camera traps. We are excited to welcome all members of the wildlife monitoring community to discover how the tools WildObs are building can contribute to your work.
