Winter Jazz at the Old Stone House - River City Jazzmen
Event description
The River City Jazzmen are a favourite with Christchurch Audiences. They have been around for many years and regularly perform at the Summer Jazz Series. This review is from their recent performance at the Wellington Jazz Festival...
The band’s playing was bright and dynamic. The arrangements were superb and interesting and the ensemble playing was tight and well-rehearsed. Every member was impressive - Michael fronting with excellent vocals and switching seamlessly to trumpet and cornet with great solos, Allan with a rich tone and flawless improvising on clarinet, Tony with excellent trom breaks, Neill with dependable driving banjo and nice vocals and interesting verbal intros, David busy on walking and running bass with his iconic bass twirls and lateral solos, and Lou supportively backing the front line, then breaking out into impressive and thrilling drum breaks. The whole performance was top-class and entertaining. All members of the band were skilled and they obviously enjoyed performing together.
