Participants will be matched with other high schoolers into bands with similar genre interests, and mentored by professional musicians to put together a culminating performance.

Wintergrass Festival Orchestra Registration ticket
Friday-Sunday, Feb. 19-21 This program is designed for ALL musicians who are experienced bowed string players from age 10 and beyond. Member of the orchestra will participate in a full weekend of clinics and performance which include rehearsals, Q&A with our collaborative artists, workshop with our WFO faculty, sectionals, lunch and dinner. This year we are thrilled to be collaborating with Dean Johnson, Rachel Sumner & Traveling Light, and Fog Holler. A detailed schedule will be sent to all orchestra members. The orchestra schedule will not allow for students to participate in other youth ed programs but will allow for participation in the festival. In fact, when not rehearsing or performing orchestra participants are strongly encouraged to attend as much of the festival as possible.

Adult Intensives
Most Intensives happen on Thursday from 10am-1pm or 2pm-5pm. The Never Too Late Intensive for adult beginners happens on Saturday from 10am-3pm. All Intensives have limited capacity for high student-teacher interaction.

Thursday, 10am-1pm, Cedar Exploring the world of music, through the lens of a fiddling cellist. Expect lots of playing, and an equal amount of listening (even at the same time). This is more about making good music than about how to play the cello, so you’re welcome to bring any instrument. We’ll learn tunes from many places and use them as springboards for musical tools for which the cello and bow are excellently suited: groove, chordal accompaniment, harmony, blending with voice, gluing a band…In short, how may we play bass, drums, banjo, guitar, mandolin, fiddle voice, all on the cello? Also cello, of course. Amidst the details, let’s roll it back to fundamental musical truths: bluegrass/old-time, classical, Celtic, rock, “roots” music - it’s all frequency (called rhythm/groove when it’s slow, notes/pitch when it’s fast!). Let’s tune our ears and rhythmic muscles, and make music.

I'll also cover some more "progressive" areas of exploration that will give you grist for composing and improvising. There'll be some back-up covered and other spontaneous ideas. Thursday, 2pm-5pm, Cedar An afternoon immersed in the journey to create great sounding moments in song. We’ll start the workshop with the basics of singing: breathing, resonance and discovering our unique ranges, with some take-home exercises to extend your practice and work through the tricky bits. We’ll move into a harmony deep dive with a couple classic Carter Family duets, using our singing skills building to close harmonize, hold a vocal line, and tell the story. All are welcome (some singing experience and ability to hold a melody line would be great). Skill level: Open to all

The best solos honor the melody while putting the instrumentalist’s stamp on it. This class will help you learn how to develop strong kick-offs and tasteful solos that build on the melody. This workshop will explore what makes a good story song and how to go about distilling a complex story into an accessible and memorable song. Takeaways for participants include narrative development, converting narrative to song lyrics, crafting melody and a hook, and approaches to arranging. Note: We will not be utilizing A.I. or apps. Bring something to write with/on. Instruments not required. Skill level: Open to all

Intensive: Never Too Late, SATURDAY, 10am-3pm ticket
Saturday, 10am-3pm, Skyvue Never Too Late is the camp for grown-ups! Cliff Perry and Emmett Pritchard lead a day of fun and learning for all, from beginners to veteran pickers. Modeled after Wintergrass’s award-winning youth programs and Cliff’s popular, long-running Bluegrass class at Shoreline Community College, the class teaches songs, jam etiquette, history, songwriting, and stagecraft, with one-on-one instrumental assistance and tutoring, in a safe, supportive, encouraging, and celebratory environment. No experience necessary; attendees will have the opportunity to try other instruments during the camp and can borrow an instrument by prior arrangement.
