Event description

First elected in 1987 to Shoalhaven City Council as a Ward Three Alderman and subsequently as Councillor, the Minister served in numerous roles including Deputy Mayor (2000-2001) and chairperson of a number of committees including Council’s Rural Fire Service Strategic Planning Committee.

After her Council career, Minister Hancock was elected to the State Parliament in 2003, as the Member for South Coast and on May 5, 2011 was elected Speaker of the NSW Legislative Assembly – the first female Member to be nominated to the role. Find out how she got there, join the conversation.

On April 2 2019, Shelley was sworn in as Minister for Local Government as part of the Berejiklian NSW Government. The Minister has a number of responsibilities including Coastal Management, Public Reserves, Graffiti Control, Companion Animals and of course guiding and assisting the state’s 128 local councils.

After serving 17 years as a councillor the Minister knows that local councils are crucial to the NSW economy and improving the lifestyle and amenity of local communities. The Minister is dedicated to assisting more women to consider running for the NSW local government elections in September. In this session we’ll not only hear about Shelley’s political journey and how her involvement in public office has had a positive impact for her community, but also about the ways she, and the Office for Local Government, are committing to lift the number of female Councillors in NSW.
