Women Weaving Stories with Song, featuring Robert Perrier
Description
Women Weaving Stories with Song: featuring Robert Perrier
A Man Weaving a Woman's Story Through Prose and Song
Robert Perrier
Robert Perrier is a singer-songwriter and author with a background in the performing arts.
Robert grew up in Brighton and Zillmere and attended school in Sandgate and Shorncliffe. His parents never talked about their past.
His mother died in 1975 after working at the Northgate Golden Circle Cannery for 21 years. She was just 51.
Six years later, after his father's death, Robert's brother sent him a biscuit tin containing his father's memorabilia. After a brief look, Robert put the lid back on and didn't open it again for another 25 years.
When he finally did, he began searching for clues to better understand his upbringing. His discoveries led to a deeper understanding of his mother's struggles and a greater appreciation of her irrepressible spirit and creativity.
In this presentation, Robert will read vignettes from a new book he is writing about his upbringing. The readings focus on his mother's story, taking us through the places of his childhood and revealing more about the woman whose life and experiences shaped his own.
The presentation will also feature Robert's original songs, weaving together family history, memories and music.
