The performers
Kat Bain: Multi-instrumentalist and singer Kat Bain is a young working mother who tells her story in song. Being a modern woman is a lot like juggling chainsaws on a unicycle - there's so much involved, and one slip can be lethal. Using music as her own therapeutic outlet, Kat provides audiences with an elective array of covers transformed by her own unique folk/pop style.
Bella Bishop: Formerly a social worker, Bella is an artist and musician who uses her gifts to support others in the community by playing her soothing music. Bella's passion is to play traditional folk music on Ocarinas she has made. Traditionally, Ocarinas are clay globular flutes often in the shape of a bird or fish. The name Ocarina is Italian for 'little goose' and in the north of Italy there are established Ocarina Orchestras.
Dani Francis: A songwriter of many years, Dani is passionate about protest music and protest art. Known also as Girl with a Stick, a name given to her as she travelled through the outback, Dani is a committed advocate for those that have suffered from injustice, including the environment. Her lyrics are a social and political commentary inspired by what she has observed in her life and travels. Dani is quick to say she is not a singer or a musician, but she sings and plays with all her heart to communicate her view of the world.
Susannah Holmes: Susannah is a passionate activist, who's led initiatives at Womenspace, Woodford Folk Festival and more. She enjoys a career in writing and advocacy with a focus on compassion and community. Susannah's son, Baxter Birrell, is a seasoned performer and piano teacher, studying at the Jazz Music Institute. Together they weave their history into the present, with a selection of heartfelt songs.
Katie Lawton: Katie is a violinist with a passion for Celtic music. She has performed in a number of bands including the Celtic band, Little Sparrow and is currently with Fellow Nomads. In July, she will be travelling to Edinburgh to perform in the Edinburgh Tattoo - one of 28 fiddlers. She is the Concertmaster of the Moreton Bay Symphony Orchestra and the Conductor of the MBSO Junior Strings ensemble. In 2024, with the help of music teacher Althea O’Dee, Katie started Brisbane North’s first dementia choir, The Bright ‘N’ Sparks, bringing much joy for carers, partners, friends and community members.
Nadia Morrison: Singer songwriter, Nadia is a proud Butchulla (K'gari) and Garrwa (Gulf of Carpentaria) woman. Her style blends her cultural roots with contemporary influences. Her connection to culture is strong with many of her songs responding to cultural and political issues. She has been featured in many live events, was formerly with The Ancient Bloods, cand is known for using her platform to raise awareness and funds to support other artists.
Threshold Singers: The Brisbane Threshold Choir is part of a worldwide organisation of women volunteers whose purpose is to relieve distress, pain or anxiety with beautiful comforting and compassionate songs. As one of the singers from Womenspace said, their unique songs are like adult lullabies of peace and love, courage and letting go, healing and joy. These songs are offered to individuals who are at life’s threshold, often seriously ill or dying as well as at ceremonies/events where comfort and healing is needed.
