This is a free one-hour youth workshop for those aged 16-19 that explains the basics of women's rights worldwide through a series of interactive group activities as well as self-reflection journalling.

The primary legal document that will be discussed is the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). CEDAW is often described as the international bill of rights for women that was adopted by the United Nations in 1979. The workshop will also facilitate a discussion on how to keep safe as a young activist.

Learning Objectives:

What the fundamental rights of women and girls are.
Who created CEDAW and who acts to implement it.
How young activists fighting for the rights of women and girls can keep safe.

Schedule:

This one-hour workshop will be in three sections:

Introductions: Whakawhanaungatanga and an introduction to the National Council of Women NZ.
The rights of women and girls: A break-down of the CEDAW articles and how they impact women and girls worldwide.
Youth activism: A discussion on ways to keep safe as a young person getting involved in activism.

We welcome young people of all genders to participate with 15 spaces available. Participants should bring something to take notes on (notepad and pen, laptop, or tablet). The workshop is hosted by the National Council of Women NZ's International Action Hub.
