Event description

The Camperdown Bushwalking Club invites you to join them on a walk to find the Wonderful Spring Wildflowers and a Lovely Little Piccaninny.  This walk is part of the Try Bushwalking Month, celebrating the 90th Anniversary of Bushwalking Victoria, the peak body representing 60+ bushwalking clubs across Victoria.

The Piccaninny (Bainggug) is a relatively small hill situated near Dunkeld, in the southern part of the Grampians. Despite its small stature, views from the top are special. The graded path is not too steep, and there are abundant opportunities to see many of the wildflowers that the Grampians has on offer during spring.

DISTANCE: 6.2km – out and back, and will take 2 – 2.5 hrs at most. Walk start 9am - please arrive 10 mins early.

WHO IS THIS WALK FOR? This walk will suit walkers of average fitness. The tracks are wide and mostly sandy (with some rock steps). Walking poles may assist if you are concerned, and sturdy shoes are essential.

CHILDREN AND PETS:  This walk is for adults 18 years and over, and due to the nature of the walk, we ask you to leave dogs and other pets at home.  Please contact the club directly to inquire about service animals, and any family or pet friendly walks.

AWT GRADE 2/3 (Easy): Suitable for most ages and fitness levels. This is a gradual hill with rock steps.  AWT Grade information.

PACE: Slow and steady with rest stops and wildflower spotting.

TOTAL ASCENT: 123 m climb of the rounded dome shaped Bainggug.

WALK DESCRIPTION:

We will access the walk from the Victoria Valley Road track head on the Grampians Peaks Trail. We will walk around the western side of Bainggug, before turning up to the track to the summit. We will stop to enjoy the views on top before descending along the Peaks Trail towards the Piccaninny East car park. We will return the way we came. If anyone is wanting some more adventure, we will drive north towards Cassidy Gap, and explore the rock formations close to the road there.

MEETING POINT: Dunkeld Information Centre, Parker Street (the main street).  Please arrive 10mins early.  We may carpool from here.

DIRECTIONS:  Dunkeld, at the southern end of the Grampians, is 300km west of Melbourne on the Glenelg Highway.  As you come in from the Melbourne side the Information Centre is on the right-hand side of the main street, in the centre of town.  Google Maps Link.

PHONE SIGNAL:  Phone signal may be present on higher sections of the walk, but is expected to be intermittent.

TOILETS: Toilets are available at the Dunkeld Visitor Information Centre.

Trips also include multi-day base camps where we camp or stay in accommodation and complete day hikes. The Otways, Great Ocean Road, Grampians, Warrnambool, Port Fairy and the local Corangamite Shire are some of the areas we walk in. Sometimes we just enjoy a social meal, a BBQ, or a cuppa together.
