On-Ly / Krakatau / High Pass Filter - Wonderlust Album Launch
Event description
On-Ly’s debut band album Wonderlust, set to release on the 22nd of March, is a hard-hitting post-bop jazz-rock odyssey that channels the sounds and movements of the 60s and 70s.
We’ll be launching Thursday night before the Easter long weekend on the 28th of March in a very special place: located at the north end of the city we will find ourselves in a room some of you may be very familiar with: the old Globe Alley.
Recently stripped to its bones its ready for a historic night.
Joining us on the stage will be not one, but two local outfits that both boast massive contributions to the Melbourne music scene; collectively spanning three decades - we present: Krakatau and the recently reformed High Pass Filter (90’s).
----------------------------------------------------------
Krakatau was formed in 2010 by James Tom and Dylan Lieberman, two friends sharing a common interest in the freeform side of late '60s/early '70s psychedelic music, progressive rock and keyboard dominated soundtrack music. As time passed, their influences shifted in direction to that of long form jazz composition, minimal music, and progressive left field sounds.2016 saw a frenzied obsession with the blistering release of Tharsis Montes/Apogean Tide 12” on Growing Bin Records, after which the self-described ‘totalitarian sci-fi meets public access jazz band' went on to headline Western Australian festival Camp Doogs and tour the east coast in 2017. Krakatau has always been a performance-based group that, while influenced in large part by music from the past, applies these influences with a self-aware, modern ear. In turn this helps to create a sound that, rather than mere mimicry and simulacra, is an interpretation of a wholly 'otherworldly space.’
After a wildly successful launch at Northside Records, High Pass Filter’s recent release is making waves and we’re delighted to share the stage with them. HPF were the kings of the Fitzroy underground. Dark, weird improvisers who aimed for something new each performance. Whilst electric guitars and rock n roll dominated Australian airwaves and stages, High Pass Filter were pioneering a sonic revolution in the shadows. The band’s indefinable sound saw them sharing lineups with artists from hardcore and punk luminaries like Fugazi and The Boredoms to dub heavyweights such as Lee Scratch Perry and The Mad Professor. The resonance of High Pass Filter’s music today speaks to the deep historic roots of the fertile culture of fringe dwellers persisting and thriving in Melbourne’s musical underground.

We fringe dwellers persist - We invite you to come thrive with us and join in on the WONDERLUST.
