Woody Weeds and Garden Escapees Augusta Workshop

Event description

Join Nature Conservation Margaret River Region and local weed guru Rick Ensley of MR Naturals in learning how to successfully identify and control some of Augusta's most invasive garden escapees including: Sweet Pittosporum, Sydney Golden Wattle, Victorian Teatree and Polygala.

Roughly 70% of all weeds are escaped garden ornamentals. These species have the ability to reproduce and spread rapidly via water, birds, soil movement and people. At this site we will see firsthand the devastating impacts of green waste dumping near bushland areas. These woody weeds actively reduce unique biodiversity values by: degrading habitat, outcompeting native plants, choking waterways, modifying the floristics, structure and nutrient status of ecosystems.

You can help to stop the spread by attending this workshop and learning:

  • How to effectively identify and control invasive woody weeds growing on your property and in the bush.
  • How to dispose of green waste safely.
  • What to plant instead for function, beauty and biodiversity in your garden.

The workshop will include a walk and talk with local bush regenerator Rick Ensley followed by a practical demonstration on how to control these species on your property. We will have a range of plant samples of species not seen on the day to further aid in building our identification of woody weeds. We encourage participants to bring their own samples and photos of species they are not sure of. Note that an ideal sample includes leaves, flowers and seedpods (if present).

Tea, coffee and light refreshments will be on offer after the workshop.

Want to join us?
