Woolloongabba: its history
Description
The area now known as Woolloongabba contained important hunting, gathering and initiation sites for the local Turrbul inhabitants. The original name for the area after European settlement began was 'One Mile Swamp', a series of creeks, waterholes and open woodland known for its taverns, wharves and brothels.
From a small frontier settlement across the river from the Brisbane township, Woolloongabba and its surrounds grew into an industrious, heavily populated district, becoming the South Brisbane municipality in 1888 and a city in its own right in 1906.
Our seminar will examine aspects of Woolloongabba's history. Our expert speakers will reveal stories of its municipal, transport, policing, religious and multicultural origins.
There will be a chance to mingle over tea and biscuits midway through the afternoon.
