Event description

PUSHING BOUNDARIES / TENDING THE SOIL

Wed 12 June 12pm [AEST]

The Master of Design Futures welcomes Kate Goodwin (Matchbox Studio), Perrie Ballantyne (Innovation Unit), Sam Rye (Monash Sustainable Development Institute) & Tanvi Maheshwari (Monash Art Design and Architecture) and host Anna Rasalingam (RMIT Master of Design Futures) for a lunchtime #work_out_loud. Everyone is invited to share their experiences and thoughts.

The compounding crises and challenges we face stretch our usual disciplinary and sectoral boundaries. They demand collaborative responses.

We need new ways to think, design and take action together.

New collaborative endeavours - such as living labs, challenge-led programs, action research, experiments, system change initiatives - provide support and space for collective imagination, testing, learning and change. They bring diverse partners together into new creative arrangements and support the development of new ideas and capacity for change.

What does evolving design practice offer to these new endeavours? How do sectors responding to collective action challenges need to adapt and change to best unlock the value of these new practices?

How are these new endeavours changing design?

KATE GOODWIN

I am a designer and researcher with 13+ years experience working for major public, private and nonprofit organisations in Australia and internationally to deliver product, service and system innovations within areas including food systems, climate democracy, regenerative education futures, and disability justice. I’m passionate about inclusive, creative and participatory approaches, and transformative change through courageous collaboration. More about me www.matchboxstudio.com.au

PERRIE BALLANTYNE

I am an innovation and learning specialist who has spent the past 20 years working with leading social innovation agencies (and lots of other organisations) in Australia and the UK on complex and ambitious change programs. Combining expertise in design and innovation methods with a deep understanding of the challenge of learning and systems change, I help groups and organisations to connect with each other around insight, issues and opportunities, to develop and test new approaches and take action on shared priorities. I work in the spaces in between organisations and institutions, mostly with communities, government and public services.

SAM RYE
I have spent the last 15+ years working across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand on social and environmental change projects across a range of areas including biodiversity loss, disaster response, community resilience, local food, mental health and wellbeing, climate action and more. I have a diverse background spanning social innovation, communications, events and process design, strategy, research, technology, partnerships, social entrepreneurship and strategic design, bringing these skills and experiences together to focus on collective action initiatives.

TANVI MAHESHWARI

I am an architect and urban designer, and currently a research fellow in the Informal Cities Lab at Monash University. My research modality is primarily collaborative and transdisciplinary, operationalised through impact based action research projects, employing digital planning support tools, futures studies, scenario thinking and co-design methods. My doctoral research explored the impact of new transportation technologies such as vehicle automation on the built environment.

ANNA RASALINGAM

I am passionate about co-creating and designing solutions to make a real difference to individuals, organisations and the broader society in which we live. As an organizational development specialist and business strategist, I have more than 15 years experience across leading corporate and international humanitarian organisations in change management, client and stakeholder management, project management and business development analysis.
