Working with men who use domestic and family violence (two days)

Event description

About this workshop:

A significant proportion of male clients in AOD services use domestic and family violence (DFV). While we need to be careful not to cause further harm, ignoring their use of DFV can result in missed opportunities to contribute to the safety of family members who experience their violence. Ignoring their harmful behaviour is also often not in your client's best interests, and can make it harder to achieve their AOD treatment goals.

This two-day workshop will help practitioners to respond safely and sensitively to clients who use DFV, in ways that minimise collusion with their violence-supporting narratives and beliefs, and that plant seeds for them to take steps towards responsibility for their behaviour. Building upon existing skills, you will learn how to listen out for and explore indicators of serious risk, and when safe to do so, engage in a degree of safety planning with the client regarding some aspects of their violent behaviour. Collaborative practice will be emphasised throughout, and actions you can take to contribute towards direct and indirect risk management that always keep the safety of family members in mind.

About the facilitator:

Nathan DeGuara has over 20 years experience working across the family violence sector including extensive direct practice experience with men using domestic and family violence in assessment, counselling, and case management capacities. Nathan has also facilitated both Corrections and community Men's Behavioural Change Groups and provides supervision and leadership in these spaces. While at Victoria's peak body for the prevention of male family violence Nathan rolled out the 24/7 Men's Referral Service for NSW and spent years working with NSW Police and DOJ strengthening assessments for Identifying the Predominant Aggressor.
