Workshop | Assemblage with Miguel Aquilizan

Join Platform artist Miguel Aquilizan for a free-form sculpture workshop. Learn about the art of assemblage as he shares his personal creative process, his philosophies on sculpture making, and his tips and techniques.

As a sculptor, Aquilizan is intuitive in his inquiry, improvisational in his approach, and inventive in his use of diverse materials. He attributes part of his love of objects and materials to his upbringing in the Philippines. 

Using a range of found objects and repurposed materials, participants will be guided to make their own sculptures. Materials will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring along their own found objects to create a uniquely personal work.

The gallery entrance is on the ground floor of the Judith Wright Arts Centre, on Berwick Street. There is wheelchair access and an accessible toilet with baby changing facilities also located on the ground floor, and we welcome guide and support dogs.

Artist biography

Miguel Aquilizan is a sculptor whose inventive assemblages incorporate all manner of found and foraged materials. Born in the Philippines, his material-led practice is a reflection of his upbringing and often explores ecology, animism, and the occult. His recent group exhibitions include Unusual Suns (MO_Space, Manila, 2023) and Material Culture in a Material World (Outer Space, Meanjin/Brisbane, 2023). He is a member of the family artist collective Fruit Juice Factori, based in Meanjin/Brisbane and the Philippines.
