Workshop: Even Wars Have Laws
Event description
Join Australian Red Cross for a workshop on international humanitarian law – also known as the laws of war.
International humanitarian law (IHL) is a set of rules which apply during armed conflict. It protects persons who are not or who are no longer participating in hostilities and restricts the means and methods of warfare. It seeks to uphold humanity in conflict and prevent the worst at the worst of times.
A short presentation will be provided by Australian Red Cross on: the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, our Fundamental Principles, our work in Australia and overseas, as well as volunteering opportunities.
This will be followed by a discussion on IHL led by protection specialist Katrina Elliot Myerson who will share insights on IHL drawing on her experience working with the International Committee of the Red Cross.
You will have the opportunity to discuss visual representations of IHL and participate in an interactive film experience If war comes to you. Stay afterwards for a cuppa and chat. Tea and coffee will be provided.
