Workshop for Parents of TGD People (Online)
Event description
This online workshop will provide guidance around parenting trans and gender diverse young people. It will provide information and will be a chance for questions and facilitated discussion.
Who is it for:
Parents and guardians of trans and gender diverse folk.
About the workshop:
- In this workshop we will explore some of the most common experiences of parents of trans people at the early stages of their journey, as well as why it is often difficult for parents, just as it is difficult for trans young people.
- We will discuss Minority Stress Theory, as it relates to the experiences of parents, and look at what the evidence shows us makes the biggest difference for the wellbeing of trans young people.
- We will talk about one of the biggest mistakes parents make as they try to protect their trans child with limited support for themselves.
- Finally, we will take a look at the 'wellbeing curve' that maps how the wellbeing of trans young people and their parents often gets worse before it gets better, and what we know helps parents to find greater ease in their own process.
The facilitator: Ari Heart
I am a therapist, educator, parent, and a trans non-binary person.
I have been supporting trans people and their families to navigate the various stages of their journeys for many years. My career in trans-focused therapeutic and educational work has culminated in the co-development of Trans Wellbeing, a Melbourne based online education and support service for trans people and their parents, and the practitioners who support them.
I am driven to support parents to find a greater sense of understanding, ease and connection with their trans loved ones.
My personal experience as a nonbinary trans person informs the depth of care I bring to this work, but it is the many thousands of hours of conversations with trans people and their families that has built much of the purpose and content of our programs at Trans Wellbeing.
