Event description

World Music Café Celebrates World Refugee Day on Friday 20 June 2025.

The World Music Café will acknowledge and celebrate World Refugee Day at the Mt Lawley Bowling Club Function Room on Friday 20 June 2025.

The special ‘Dinner and Show’ event features three outstanding musical acts, Ukrainian band The Buevskie’s, Afghan musician Asad Alizada, and Andean band Huaira, all including musicians of refugee backgrounds, plus a three-course meal by the Casa Latina catering team, led by Tamara Rodriguez.

The Buevskie’s are a dynamic group of Ukrainian and Australian musicians performing a blend of traditional and modern Ukrainian songs from North of the Black Sea. Formed by husband-and-wife team of Irina and Rob Buevsky-Cowell, The Buevskie’s play an uplifting repertoire drawing on traditional and contemporary folk, with hints of soul, and blues music genres.

Asad Alizada is a Hazara singer and tanbur player from the mountainous Hazaristan region in central Afghanistan. He brings his beautiful traditional music from his Hazara culture to Perth after relocating as a refugee migrant in 2010. Listen to an ABC radio interview with Asad Alizada here.

Andean ensemble, Huaira, perform traditional music from the Andes region of Chile featuring the pan pipes, quena, charango, guitar, and drum. Founded by Manuel Munoz, a former political refugee in 1984, Huaira, have been performing traditional Andean music in Australia for 40 years linking back to the original Ethnic Music Centre in North Perth. Now with inter-generational band members, Huaira, play the beautiful melodies and dynamic rhythms of the South American Andes.

The ‘Dinner & Show’ concert also includes a delicious three-course meal created by Venezuelan chef and former refugee, Tamara Rodriguez and the World Music Cafe catering team.

“This is a respectful World Music Café show celebrating the significant cultural contributions that people of refugee backgrounds have brought to our shared Australian community” said World Music Café producer, Jon Cope.

Described by the UWA Centre for Social Impact as ‘An Oasis of Integration in Our Country,’ World Music Café is a successful social enterprise established in 2019, that provides genuine economic and social inclusion for musicians and crew members of new migrant and refugee backgrounds. World Music Café was also a national ‘Social Entrepreneur of the Year’ finalist in the 2022 Australian Third Sector Awards.
