World Music Café will showcase Indian Classical and Fusion music with SwaraSynthesis and Eastern European choral a cappella ensemble Radujsja at the Mt Lawley Bowling Club Function Room on Friday 31 October 2025.

SwaraSynthesis is an innovative Indian Classical and Indian Fusion ensemble led by composer and musical innovator Avra Banajee. In their presentation ‘North meets South’ they explore a dialogue between two major traditions of Indian classical music: Hindustani (North Indian) and Carnatic (South Indian) music. This collaborative performance promises an intriguing journey where rhythm, melody, and improvisation intersect, highlighting both the shared roots and the distinctive nuances of each style. Avra is a Perth-based sarod player, composer, and cultural bridge-builder whose music fuses the depth of Indian classical traditions with contemporary global genres such as jazz, blues, rock, and Sufi melodies. He has composed more than 60 original works and his compositions have earned him five InterContinental Music Awards alongside recognition from The Recording Academy (GRAMMYs) highlighting his global music conversations. Avra continues to innovate with new releases, international collaborations, and film tracks, creating music that honours tradition, embraces innovation, and transcends cultural boundaries. Performing with Avra will be Krishna Prasad on violin, Sivakumar on Tabla, Bobby George on Mridangam, and vocalist, Amitav Islam.

Radujsja, meaning Rejoice, is a five-voice a cappella ensemble specialising in Eastern European folk music, led by popular choral festival coordinator, Matthew Clements. For over a decade, Radujsja has explored the complex art of polyphonic singing, that pre-dates written records, from across many cultures and Eastern European regions gathering works from Georgia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Serbia and beyond. Listeners will be enthralled by the dissonance and asymmetric rhythms of this extraordinary music and engaging vocal style delivered by a quality ensemble of singers.

Established in 2019, World Music Café is a successful social enterprise that provides genuine economic and social inclusion for the WMC crew members of new migrant and refugee backgrounds. Described by the UWA Centre for Social Impact as ‘An Oasis of Integration in Our Country’, World Music Café was a national ‘Social Entrepreneur of the Year’ finalist in the Australian Third Sector Awards 2022.
