Event description

This World Ocean Day, we invite you to join a critical conversation exploring the deep and evolving relationship between our ocean and climate change. Too often, the ocean is celebrated for its biodiversity and beauty, yet overlooked for the essential role it plays in regulating our climate and protecting us from its extremes.

In this panel, we begin by examining the profound and accelerating impacts of climate change on our ocean systems, from shifting currents and warming waters to rising seas and collapsing ecosystems. We then turn to the ocean’s untapped potential in climate mitigation and adaptation, from carbon sequestration and marine renewables to nature-based solutions that support both people and planet.

Finally, we explore the complex reality of applying these solutions - including the need for community trust, cross-sector collaboration, and bold systems thinking - to implement effective action in one of the most challenging and dynamic spaces on Earth.

Panelists:

  • Georgia Watson - Good for the Gong

  • Daniel Fairweather - Howden

  • Prof. Jennifer Verduin - Murdoch University

  • Dr Tonny Wagey - TierraMar Indonesia

Facilitator: Jessica Leck - OceanEarth Foundation

This discussion will lay the foundations for deeper understanding and spark ideas for transformative change in the face of a rapidly changing climate.
