Event description

World Sight Day (WSD) is dedicated to raising awareness about vision impairment, blindness, and the importance of eye health. This WSD, meet with the team at VisAbility and learn about the services available and how they are tailored to people with low or no vision. This event welcomes allied health service providers who want to learn more about how to best support clients with vision loss.

Featuring presentations from VisAbility's low vision specialists covering a range of topics, including:

Learning about the role of Orthoptists in supporting the low-vision community 

  • low vision services for kids and adults
  • what is low vision
  • when to refer and why
  • the benefits of having a function vision assessment report to support therapy intervention.
  • basics of magnifiers and a quick demo of equipment
  • bigger brighter bolder principle.

Hearing about life at home, at work, and in the community from people with lived experience of blindness. Ryan and Manny will reveal various assistive technology and training that they've found useful in their daily lives.

Understanding the role of an Orientation & Mobility Specialist

  • What is O&Mo Introduction to long canes (various types and purposes)
  • Practical demonstration of particular skills or techniques (human sighted guide)
  • How and when to make appropriate referrals to O&M services.

After the event, join us onsite for a short networking sundowner.
