Description

If your aged care home faced an emergency, would you know what would happen next?

What happens if residents need to evacuate? How will families be kept informed? How will medications, mobility and individual care needs be managed if services are disrupted?

Join Council on the Ageing (COTA) Queensland for a free online webinar bringing together lived experience, residential aged care and disaster recovery expertise.

Designed for older people, aged care residents, families and carers, this practical conversation will explore what emergency preparedness means for the people living in residential aged care and the people who care about them.

Hear from three perspectives

Dr Desley Marshall | Lived experience

Desley’s mother, Eileen, experienced three evacuations from her residential aged care home during major flooding in St George. Desley will share what those experiences meant for Eileen and her family, including the importance of preparation, communication and supporting residents through the disruption of evacuation.

Kelly Roberts | Residential aged care provider

Kelly is the Service Manager at Orana Aged Care in Kingaroy and brings hands-on experience in emergency preparedness and response. She’ll share a practical aged care perspective on preparing for emergencies, maintaining care when services are disrupted, supporting staff and residents, and knowing when additional support or evacuation may be needed.

Annabelle Johnstone | Human and Social Recovery Practitioner and Churchill Fellow

Annabelle has 20 years’ experience in human and social recovery and has supported communities following some of Queensland and Australia’s biggest disasters. Her Churchill Fellowship investigated the human and social impacts of disasters on residential aged care and their residents. She’ll share insights from her research and what residents and families should know before an emergency.

Moderated by Darren Young | CEO, Council on the Ageing Queensland

What will we talk about?

We’ll explore emergency preparedness in residential aged care, what residents and families might expect when an emergency occurs, and the kinds of questions you can ask your aged care provider to feel better informed and prepared.

There will also be an opportunity to ask questions during the webinar.

You’ll leave with a clearer understanding of what to expect and practical questions you can ask your aged care provider now.

Know what to ask. Know what to expect. Be better prepared.
