Wound Wound Workshop: Thermo-Plastic Ring Making and Discourse with Debris Facility
Event description
In this intimate workshop and guided tour of the exhibition "Wearing.Opacities", Debris Facility will lead participants in a process of making rings out of medical thermo-plastic with found materials.
As the conclusion to the exhibition at Alta Forma, a collaboration between Hen Vaughan and Debris Facility, this workshop will reconfigure the exhibition into a temporary collective studio, where we will adopt and learn processes from the Debris Facility to make rings or other wearable and jewellery objects using off-cut medical plastics and found materials. Participants will be asked to bring a small collection of materials which might be used as 'gems' to set into the plastic. We will discuss overlaps between bio-medical processes, adornment, beauty industries, plastic capitalism, queer and disabled embodiment while we make works together.
No prior skills or practice necessary.
Please let us know any access needs and we'll do our best to accomodate.
If price is a barrier to participation please reach out to Alta Forma or Debris Facility.
‘Wearing.Opacities’ is an installation outcome of two years collaborative research and making between Debris Facility and Hen Vaughan, exploring wearable technologies, bio-medical adornment, and concrete poetry for the body
‘We administer images-print-text to the skin, refracting how bodily subjecthoods are materially, socially and medically produced. Materials metabolised include adhesives, cosmetics, casts, capsules, canulas, calluses, DNA, hormones, plastics, and asemic residues found on the body. Our processes of augmentation, mutation and adornment narrate and resist capture. They attune to in/visibilities and il/legibilities resonant with queer/trans and medicalised experiences - spectrums of opacity that shift through amplification, magnification, synthesis; concealment, redaction, noise. Through intradependent working, we conceal and reveal our in/dividual capacities, desires, material processes and bodily poetics. Wearing as an act of covering and protection, as well as degradation and disintegration, are the oscillations and feedback loops which we perform. Adornment is dis/embodied to produce haptics and affects embracing cyborg friction and Body Corporate becoming.’- Debris Facility and Hen Vaughan, 2025
