Woven Bamboo Flower Vase: A Hands-On Bamboo Weaving Workshop

Come spend a creative day exploring the beauty and versatility of bamboo!

In this hands-on workshop, you’ll use pre-split pieces of bamboo to create an elongated woven flower basket designed to hang on the wall. Inside your woven basket, you’ll make a small bamboo vessel that holds water, turning your woven piece into a functional flower vase.

We’ll work with bamboo in a way that allows its natural qualities to guide the design. You’ll learn how to bend, weave, tie, sew, and shape the material while discovering how a collection of simple bamboo strips can become a beautiful three-dimensional object.

What you’ll learn

Throughout the class, you’ll learn and practice several bamboo-working techniques:

• Heat bending bamboo to create curves and shape

• Weaving pre-split bamboo pieces together

• Tying bamboo elements securely

• Creating and attaching a sewn rim to finish the edge of your basket

• Using a Dremel tool for shaping and refining bamboo

• Creating a small bamboo vessel to fit inside your woven basket

• Combining different bamboo elements to add structure and decoration

Once you have learned the basic weaving structure, you'll have the opportunity to make creative choices that make your flower vase your own. You’ll be offered different options for incorporating small bamboo elements and decorative details, allowing each student to create something with its own character and personality.

At the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with a handmade woven bamboo wall flower vase, complete with a small bamboo vessel for holding flowers.
