Geoff Thompson: Adventures in Science, Illustration and Photography
Geoff Thompson’s love of drawing, insects and photography led to a long career combining all these interests. He scored a job as a research assistant at University of Queensland and was sent off for two one-hour lessons in scientific insect illustration. Later this skill led to a job at the Queensland Museum, where he participated in adventurous rainforest mountain field trips, helped curate the collection, prepare displays, research historical publications and illustrate many new species. He also explored the museum’s fabulous library and developed a special interest in historical illustrations, further informed by his hobby printmaking. Later, advancing technology and a Queensland-Smithsonian Fellowship led to a new career in deep-focus photography, allowing him to produce astounding, full-colour images of tiny invertebrate structures that he couldn’t have imagined at the start of his career.
