Description

Learn how to craft dialogue that sounds real and helps immerse your reader.

This practical workshop will help you to learn the mechanics of writing dialogue, develop voice and tone, weave in action, and create realistic exchanges between your characters. Emily loves character-driven work and is dedicated to helping you bring your dialogue to life. The workshop involves analysing scenes in books, and creative exercises, and is suitable for writers at all stages of their journeys.

    

Learning outcomes

As part of this workshop, you will:

  • Learn about the mechanics of dialogue.
  • Improve your understanding of voice and tone.
  • Understand how to weave in action.
  • Practise adding realism to your character exchanges.

       

    Format

    This is an in-person workshop with a focus on writing craft; it will be held at State Library of Queensland. This workshop is suitable for writers of all levels and writing backgrounds.

       

    About Emily

    Emily Larkin is a Queensland author who holds a Doctorate in Writing and teaches writing and English Literature at the University of Queensland. She writes for children, teens, and adults. She is the author of The Whirlpool, a picture book illustrated by Hélène Magisson, and published by Wombat Books, and Emily's dystopian novel Within the Ward was published by Rhiza Edge. Emily’s short fiction and poetry features in Australian and international literary journals, magazines, and anthologies. With author Lynne Stringer, Emily co-edited Stepping Sideways—an anthology of steampunk and dystopian stories published in 2024.
