Writing Workshop: The Art of Feedback

Price $25 USD + Sales tax Register

Event description

May 23 at 9:00 AM PT

Feedback is critical in the writing process; it provides the invaluable outside eye that every writer needs in order to get their project ready for agents, publishers, and readers. But feedback is challenging. When receiving it, it’s difficult to know how to apply another person’s opinion of our work without compromising our own artistic vision. When giving it, it’s important to provide constructive observations rather than rewrite another person’s work. And feedback can bring up tricky feelings of inadequacy and doubt.

Join Allegory Editing Founder and Developmental Editor Andrea Karin Nelson for this workshop on the art of feedback. We will go over the various sources of feedback, from critique groups to beta readers to professional editors, and how and when they are each useful. We will learn how to mentally prepare to joyfully receive feedback and make the most out of it. We will also discuss how to effectively provide feedback for other writers and how to establish productive critique partnerships.

Presenter Bio: In addition to her developmental editing work with published novelists, playwrights, and essayists, Andrea brings a unique set of experiences and skills to her editing craft. Twenty years as a writer and theater maker has developed her keen sense of story structure, plot and character development. Her plays have been commissioned and produced across the United States and performed in both English and American Sign Language. Fifteen years as a Master-Level, Certified Sign Language Interpreter has finely tuned her ear to the subtleties of language and the nuances of human interactions. And with over two decades as an educator, her teacher's heart allows Andrea to personally tailor her work with each writer.
