Event description

This workshop is for students graduating in 2023.
Avoid the biggest pitfalls of year 12 chemistry by ensuring you have strong fundamentals in the most relevant year 11 content.

What’s in this workshop?

Most weaknesses in Yr12 Chemistry originates from a poor grasp of Yr11 fundamentals. This is a problem that is challenging to fix during the Yr12 course, as affected students will need to constantly devote more time and revision every time a relevant topic comes up.

In this workshop, students will retread the most essential of Yr11 content from all four modules, where they will be shown what will be expected of them to be able to apply them at the HSC standard.

The topics covered include intermolecular forces and chemical structure from Module 1, harder stoichiometry problems from Module 2, collision theory from Module 3, and Gibbs free energy from Module 4.

After the workshop, students can use what they have learnt to make an informed decision on which tutoring centre to study senior science with.

Who’s teaching this?

Anthony Mai is our Chemistry coordinator. His vision is to change the way science is taught, which is currently unclear, boring, and lacks relevance to a student's personal development. The start of a student's learning journey must begin with nurturing the right mindset and study habits, and Anthony is able to do this from the insights he has amassed from years working with gifted students as well as his introspection and study on the nature of learning and science education.

Anthony was a senior tutor who spearheaded the Chemistry Olympiad Training program at James Ruse from 2017-2018 to establish a systemised course to prepare students for the Australian Science Olympiad Exams, as well as promoting a culture of healthy ambition and supportive cooperation amongst the student body. Since 2019 to present day, he is an official staff member and lecturer with the Australian Chemistry Olympiad, being involved with the running of the national selection exams as well as teaching at the summer holiday intensive camps.
