South West Music Regional Conservatorium present Yarra Winds. A woodwind sextet consisting of prize winning students from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music – University of Melbourne.

Join us to experience the serene and soothing sounds of woodwind instruments at a lunchtime classical concert. Let the flute's gentle whispers, the clarinet's rich tones, and the oboe's mournful melodies transport you to a world of elegance and refinement. The intricate fingerwork and breath control of the musicians will leave you in awe. The concert will feature timeless masterpieces by Leos Janacek and Astor Piazolla.

About the musicians…

Anika Weibgen:

Anika Weibgen is currently undertaking her honours year at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, studying with Jeffrey Crellin. She previously learnt from Anne Gilby and Karen Lichnovsky.

During her time at the Conservatorium she has played with the University of Melbourne Wind Symphony and Symphony Orchestra, including the orchestra’s recent international tour, performing in venues in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.

At the beginning of 2023, Anika was a part of Melbourne Opera’s production of Wagner’s Ring Cycle. She has also performed with the Aussie Pops Orchestra, Macedon Chamber Orchestra, side by side projects with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne Youth Orchestra (2018 & 2021) and Bendigo Symphony Orchestra.

Ella Kay-Butterworth:

Originally from the UK, Ella Kay-Butterworth has been playing flute since the age of 9 after she spent two years desperately trying to learn the piano and violin. Ella's passion for music is driven by a love for all things weird and wonderful and is rooted in the traditions of both classical and contemporary performance. Her favourite part about playing flute is getting to play all the auxiliary members of the flute family (i.e. bass, alto and piccolo). Outside of music, Ella loves making pottery and weightlifting.

Khye Cash:

Khye is an honours student studying French horn at the University of Melbourne after completing his bachelor’s degree in Perth, WA. He enjoys playing in a range of groups such as large orchestras and smaller chamber works. His favourite composers are Brahms, Wagner, and Mendelssohn. Outside of music, you can catch Khye watching AFL and European football on the television or reading a book (when he’s not practicing).

Jamilla Lamb:

Jamilla Lamb is a clarinettist originally from Nipaluna, Hobart, who is now in her honours year at the University of Melbourne. Jamilla especially loves orchestral and chamber music and the intricacies that come with making music with others. She is fond of clarinet auxiliary instruments and will often be practicing a bit of bass clarinet and the occasional E-flat clarinet or basset horn.

Outside of music, Jamilla enjoys hiking and film photography.

Michael Beech:

Michael is a 2nd year Bachelor of Music Performance student at the University of Melbourne conservatorium of music. Whilst he is studying Clarinet, he finds it very hard to keep himself away from playing other woodwind instruments, such as flute and oboe. Piano lessons with his Grandma is how he began his interest and love for music, which has progressed into him enjoying being able to play a wide range of woodwind instruments and enjoys doubling in theatre productions. Outside music, he spends his time exploring cool cafes in the Melbourne with friends, thrift shopping and enjoying his daily coffees from the various coffee shops around uni campus.

Sam Battock:

Originally from New Zealand, Sam Battock is a bassoonist from Brisbane. She received a Bachelor of Music (Performance) from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music in 2022 with guidance from David Mitchell (QSO). In 2024 she relocated to Melbourne to begin a Master of Music (Orchestral Performance) studying under Lyndon Watts, where she is a recipient of the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music Grant, awarded for excellence.

During her studies Sam has performed as Principal Bassoon and Principal Contrabassoon with the Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra (QLD) and University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

Sam enjoys chamber music performance, having recently performed with Cadenza Chamber Players at QPAC, and in Side-by-Side projects with players of the Australian String Quartet and Ensemble Q.

Away from the bassoon, Sam enjoys reading or going rollerskating in skateparks.
