Event description

Yirrmal Marika is one of Australia’s most compelling contemporary voices — a Yolŋu singer-songwriter from Yirrkala in Northeast Arnhem Land. A proud Rirratjingu man and the son of Witiyana Marika (a founding member of Yothu Yindi), Yirrmal carries a powerful legacy of cultural storytelling through the music of his elders, further enriched by the songwriting mentorship of icons like Archie Roach, Shane Howard (Goanna), and Neil Murray (Warumpi Band).

Fusing the ancient with the modern, Yirrmal’s music blends traditional Yolŋu manikay (songlines) with acoustic soul and contemporary folk. Singing in both Yolŋu Matha and English, his songs are deeply emotional, connecting audiences to his culture that dates back over 60000 years.   Each live performance is a unique and powerful cultural offering — an invitation to experience the spirit, land, and language of Northeast Arnhem Land.

Yirrmal has performed at major Australian festivals and international stages, earning acclaim for his soaring vocals, emotional honesty, and cultural integrity. His debut EP Youngblood and collaborations with artists like Dan Sultan and Baker Boy have established him as a leader in the new generation of First Nations artists reshaping Australian music.

Beyond the stage, Yirrmal is a cultural ambassador and educator, dedicated to preserving and evolving Yolŋu traditions.

At Wilder Tasmania, Yirrmal will deliver more than an incredible live performance — he will guide the audience on a journey through voice, spirit, and deep cultural roots: a rare and moving experience from one of Australia’s most important artists.
