Jewish Community Table Talk- exploring our racial and ethnic diversity
Event description
Come together with Jewish people from all over the city of Sephardi, Mizrachi, Ashkenasi, and other cultural backgrounds. Share your stories of family, culture, and belonging to explore our community's vibrant diversity.
In the Sydney Jewish Community, we recognise that our organisations' leadership, stories, curriculums, and resources are dominated by Ashkenasi Jews (Jewish people of Eastern European descent). There are also deep divisions between Jewish people, organisations, and communities of different ethnic backgrounds. Our table talk on Sunday, April 3rd will be the beginning of further action to change this.
We have chosen this date due to its proximity to the commemoration of the anniversary of the Expulsion of the Jews from Spain. The Alhambra Decree, issued by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, on March 31st, 1492, gave the order for all Jewish people to be expelled from Spain and never return. Whilst the Expulsion marks a time of mourning for many Jewish communities, we acknowledge that it was also significant in shaping the cultural identity of Sephardi Jews. The commemoration of the Expulsion is not currently observed in Sydney, our table talk will be the first.
