WHAT THE COURSE COVERS
The Youth Mental Health First Aid course will teach you how to assist adolescents who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves, using a practical, evidence based Action Plan. This course is based on guidelines developed through the expert consensus of people with lived experience of mental health.
Topics covered include:
- depression
- anxiety
- eating disorders
- substance use problems
Mental health crisis covered include:
- suicidal thoughts and behaviours
- non suicidal self-injury
- panic attacks
- traumatic events
- severe psychotic states
- severe effects from alcohol or other drug use
- aggressive behaviours
You will learn how and where to get help when a young person is developing a mental illness, what help research has shown to be effective and how to provide first aid in crisis situations.
This course will enable you to:

- PROVIDE SKILLS
- RESPOND IN A CRISIS
- REDUCE STIGMA
COURSE COMPONENTS
Component 1:
4hrs self-paced eLearning component
Component 2:
3 x 2.5hr zoom sessions led by an accredited YMHFA Instructor
Component 3 - after completion of the course:
Complete a self-paced survey
Complete a self-paced online assessment in order to become accredited
