Event description

This intensive 4-week program introduces students to the complete process of creating custom tabletop games and tabletop role-playing games through digital design and modern fabrication techniques. Students will develop both creative design skills and technical proficiency using industry-standard software and digital manufacturing processes to bring physical game concepts to life.

The program combines conceptual game design with practical application of digital tools including Inkscape vector graphics software, laser cutting preparation, and 3D printing design. Students may work individually or collaborate in small groups, depending on their project preferences and creative vision. All participants will complete the program with a fully functional, professionally finished tabletop game of their own creation, housed in a custom-designed storage case.

This is a structured, focused learning experience that requires consistent engagement and active participation. Students will work individually on their projects while collaborating in a supportive learning environment that emphasizes both creativity and technical precision.

Board Game Design & Digital Fabrication runs Wednesdays over 4 sessions:

  • Session 1 - Wed 27 Aug - Concept Refinement & Board Design

  • Session 2 - Wed 3 Sep - Asset Creation & Initial Laser Cutting

  • Session 3 - Wed 10 Sep - Asset Finalization & 3D Dice Design

  • Session 4 - Wed 17 Sep - Game Case Design & Presentations

Program Details:

  • Time: 3:30 PM – 6:00 PM (Teaching starts at 4:00 PM)

  • Cost: $80 for all 4 sessions

  • Ages: Open to students aged 11 to 17

  • Location: Building L3 - 1 Jarlo Drive, Lilydale

This program welcomes creative minds of all skill levels. While no preparation is required before attending, students may find it helpful to consider what type of tabletop game project interests them most. Those drawn to creating original tabletop games or roleplaying systems might enjoy thinking about game mechanics, player count, or visual themes that appeal to them. Students interested in developing custom content for existing games such as Dungeons & Dragons, Magic: The Gathering, or other established systems could consider which specific elements they would like to design.

Having some initial ideas ready can help students make the most of their time during Week 1, allowing them to move quickly into the exciting digital design process.
