Zen workshop and meditation day
Description
In this experiential workshop (17 October), Australian Zen teacher Dr Andrew Sono Tootell, following in the footsteps of the founder of the Ordinary Mind Zen School, Joko Beck, and his own teacher, Barry Magid, will explore how we can integrate western psychotherapy into a contemporary form of Zen practice. Participants will explore a number of key metaphors which shape our understanding of taking the path of Zen such as: “leaving and returning home”, “finding the way” “finding refuge” and the “true self”; and sitting alongside these metaphors we will also explore key metaphors from western psychotherapy shaped by our understanding of psychological trauma, such as the importance of a felt sense of safety, connection and disconnection, the importance of the “sense of self” and the acceptance of multiple self-states . The day is structured to create an opportunity for participants to share their experiences through a blend of guided and silent meditation (Zazen), group discussion and interactive exercises, fostering an environment of safety, curiosity, inquiry and intimacy.
You are also invited to join us for a day of silent Zen meditation (zazenkai) on Sunday, 18th October. The day will include sitting and walking meditation, dharma talks, and interviews with Sono.
You are welcome to attend either or both days, Accommodation at the retreat centre is also available for Saturday night.
