19th HW Arndt Lecture by Professor Douglas Irwin

The HW Arndt Lecture honours Professor Heinz Arndt's long and distinguished career in development economics and Asia-Pacific regional studies, as well as his contributions to the University.

In this talk, Professor Douglas Irwin from Dartmouth College will discuss how the world is in a new phase of globalisation with the demise of policy liberalisation and the rise of economic nationalism, industrial policy, and geopolitical tensions. He will ask "What can we learn from past waves of globalisation to help guide us in this new era?" He will also discuss the current period of 'slowbalisation' and potential economic fragmentation.

Is globalisation in retreat?

The world is in a new phase of globalisation with the demise of policy liberalisation and the rise of economic nationalism, industrial policy, and geopolitical tensions. What can we learn from past waves of globalisation to help guide us in this new era? This lecture will review the four previous globalisation epochs, from the mid-nineteenth century Pax Brittanica to the 'hyperglobalisation' of the 1990s, as a prelude to discussing the current period of 'slowbalisation' and potential economic fragmentation.
