Where your money goes - Fundraising for 2022

This year, funds raised at the Refugee Ball will go towards supporting children and young people with opportunities for positive youth development through STARTTS Camp in Partnership with Outward bound Australia. STARTTS has found that Youth attending camp allows children and young people to develop supportive relationships with fellow campers, staff, and provides good role model to encourage them to participate and engage in in safe risk taking activities, at the same time developing decision making skills. Through a narrative approach, camps also build trust and help young people reflect upon their experiences.

Camps provide an avenue for examining positive youth development. Camps represent environments where children and young people can develop their emotional intelligence and social capital, as camp activities teach children and young people how to build positive relationships and how to connect on an emotional level which leads to positive outcomes. Findings reveal that increases in social capital results in increases in emotional intelligence (STARTTS Social Capital Theory).

Funds raised will also support priority areas of the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims (IRCT). The IRCT is a global network of torture and trauma rehabilitation centres – more than 160 centres in over 70 countries that has been fighting for a world without torture for over 30 years.

Together with its member centres, the IRCT leads a global movement striving for justice for victims of torture and the prevention of torture and refugee trauma worldwide also ensuring that torture and refugee trauma rehabilitation services globally are able to continue to provide vital medical, psychological and social services.
