Event description

Rotary Elizabeth Quay invites members, guests and friends to our guest speaker events: 'Modern Day Masculinity'.

What does it mean to “be a man” and what actually constitutes “healthy” masculinity versus “toxic” masculinity? Society’s ongoing gender politics debates have at times cast shame upon masculinity, adding to the existing confusion that many boys face as they try to navigate through life with limited access to strong male role models, or worst still, only having exposure to poor or distorted media portrays of what it means to be a man. As men try learning how to protect and provide for their families and communities, many often fall prey to the false belief of self-reliance, cutting  themselves off from receiving much needed support on topics such as developing emotional intelligence, resilience, leadership skills, strategies to improve physical health, mental health and overall self-esteem. It is little wonder that:

  • Men on average live for six years less than women do.
  • Over 90 percent of acts of violence are carried out by men.
  • The leading cause of death among men between fifteen and 44 is self-inflicted death.

Confusion kills confidence … how do you know if you are worthy of winning? How do you even know how to win if you cannot properly define what it means to be a man? If you do not understand who you are, how can you find purpose to give meaning to life?

To help gain clarity around these important questions and propose some positive steps forwards,  Rotary of Elizabeth Quay invites members, guests and friends to attend our special upcoming event: 'Modern Day Masculinity'. Here we will hear from:

  • Keynote Speaker John Worsfold (HR Director, Coach and Teaming Expert): John Worsfold is a former Australian rules football player and coach best known for his career for the West Coast Eagles in the Australian Football League (AFL). He was an inaugural squad member of West Coast Eagles on their formation in 1986, won the club's best and fairest award in 1988, appointed captain of the club in 1991 until his retirement in 1998. Mr Worsfold was assistant coach of Carlton Football Club from 1999 to 2001 and senior coach of the Essendon Bombers from October 2015 to October 2020. John is married and father to three children. John Worsfold will share his personal leadership journey and talk about his career as a player, captain and coach, as he lead groups of young men to achieve their goals, whilst remaining humble and true to themselves.
  • Panelist: Gareth Shanthikumar (Co-Founder/Director - Man-Up) - Gareth is passionate about making a change for good in this world, his goal is to empower those around him to tap into their full potential and encourage lasting impact. HE's come to understand that the only way to truly help someone is to make them realise that they themselves are the key to this - and so he is determined to help set an example and support people in their journey to their highest self. His current focus is on helping young men grow into healthy men by equipping them with the skills to deal with real life stressors - in an effort to bring more peace, joy and love into the world.
  • Panelist: Peta Slocombe (M. Psych) MAPS - Peta is a Psychologist, author, coach and thought leader in mental health, leadership, culture and performance. Specializing in high functioning mental health and Executive psychology, Peta has 27 years of working clinically with leaders, Boards, parents, partners and patients who recognize that the thinking that got them to this point in life, often won’t take them to the next one.
