Balancing human rights with duty of care

The right to take personal risks and make mistakes is fundamental to our humanity, independence and sense of self. Taking risks and experiencing the occasional spectacular failure is how we learn and grow as human beings and is central to the human experience. Regardless of vulnerabilities, part of ensuring human dignity is accepting the right of each person to take risks and make choices.

Yet, human services, health and caring professionals have a legal duty of care towards their clients. Similarly, parents and personal carers have a legal and ethical responsibility towards the loved ones they care for.

This course explores how we can ensure we meet legal and safety requirements without wrapping those we care for in cotton wool. It looks at ways to maximise personal dignity, choice and self-determination, while ensuring caring responsibilities are met.

SCHOLARSHIPS
