Nursing Theory as a Framework to Support and Nourish Nursing

The Caritas Processes®, as part of Watson’s Theory of Unitary Caring Science, provides a framework to experience transpersonal caring that enriches the relationship with self and others and a framework to implement sustainable changes in clinical, educational, and leadership settings. The Caritas Processes® will be introduced, and participants will be provided a guided experience to identify practice areas they wish to repattern/change, reconnect with their reasons for becoming a nurse, and gain an understanding of micro-practices for recentering to present and self-compassion.

Co-Presenters:

Peter Alandt MSN, RN, HNB-BC is a registered nurse who combines experience in emergency and critical care settings with a holistic practice. He started his journey into nursing as an ADN in 2007. He returned for his BSN in 2013 and completed a master's degree in leadership and administration at the University of Colorado 2022. Peter’s experiences as a staff nurse, traveler, and teacher have provided insight into how nursing is practiced from the academic institution to the community hospital. His passion for holistic nursing places the patient and family at the center of care while acknowledging the significant role the nurse plays in patient outcomes. As a teacher at Linfield since 2020, he is currently a clinical adjunct preparing senior students to transition to professional practice. As a function of his holistic practice, he incorporates intention, breathing, gratitude, and reflection into his teaching as tools for students to use in their personal and professional practices. Peter’s motivation as a nurse educator is to prepare the next generation of nurses and nurse leaders who embrace the diversity of nurses and patients to co-create healthcare. As a Caritas Coach, Peter uses Watson’s Human Caring Theory and the Caritas Processes® as the foundation supporting his nursing practice.

Lorraine M. Gdanetz, PhD, RN, PCCN is a Watson Caring Science Institute Faculty Associate and Director of the Watson Caring Science Institutes Caritas Coach Education Program. She holds a temporary graduate faculty position at the University of Colorado Denver Anschutz Medical Campus, College of Nursing to serve as a content expert on dissertation committees in Watson’s Unitary Caring Science. Lori has also held a position as adjunct faculty at the University of Colorado, Denver College of Nursing facilitating a 9-credit Nursing Education Certificate Program. She recently retired from her role as the Associate Director at Gannon University’s Villa Maria School of Nursing located in Erie, Pennsylvania. Through the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, Lori is board certified in Adult Progressive Care. Lori has published, presented, and continues to be active in research utilizing Unitary Caring Science and the Caritas Processes. associated with her passion for online education, all ways of knowing, and honoring as well as discovering an individual’s lived experience.

Holistic Health & Wellness Coaching

“Health & wellness coaches display unconditional positive regard for their clients and a belief in their ability to change, honoring the fact that each client is an expert on their own life while ensuring that all interactions are respectful and non-judgmental" (NBC-HWC website). This session will relate how holistic nurses can learn integrative health modalities and coaching skills to improve the health of healthcare providers, patients, and communities; different pathways in which nurses can become certified health & wellness coaches; the importance of a trauma-informed lens in client-coaching interactions; and the necessity for maintaining self-care and self-reflective practice. Participants will have the opportunity to practice integrative health coaching skills to elicit change.

Co-Presenters:

Janet M. Banks, DNP, MSN, BSN, RNC-OB, CNE, NC-BC is a Transformational Coach and a Registered Nurse. She is Board Certified as a Nurse Coach by the American Holistic Nurse Credentialing Center (AHNCC). Janet helps people who are experiencing compassion fatigue to recapture their meaningful life by reconnecting to their inner knowing. She enjoys being outdoors in Oregon with a knitting project close by, traveling to new places with her family, and spending time with her grands (canine and human). Janet is committed to showing up and serving you powerfully.

Kala A. Mayer, PhD, MPH, RN, CNE, MCHES has earned an MPH degree in Social and Behavioral Sciences, and a PhD degree in Nursing Science from the University of Washington, Seattle. She is also a Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) through the NLN and a Master Certified Health Education Specialist through the NCHEC. She is scheduled to complete her Health Coaching Certification through the NBHWC in July 2023. Dr. Kala Mayer is an Associate Professor, and the Community & Program Development Lead for the University of Portland School of Nursing’s Bachelor of Science in Integrative Health & Wellness (IHW) Degree Program. She is leading the development and implementation of IHW-Community Partnerships & Evaluation including educational, practice, and research activities, and teaching in the Undergraduate Nursing and IHW Programs on campus. She currently serves as co-chair on the SON’s Professional Development Committee and as a member of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Curriculum Committee.

Navigating Health Promotion By Strengthening the Mind-body Connection

The mind, body, and spirit are interconnected. If one is unwell or under stress, it directly affects the health of the other areas. Intentionally building mind-body practices into our day helps us mindfully spend time in strengthening the psychological and physiological aspects of our well-being by using tools and practices that allow them to affect each other in a more positive aspect. Strengthening the mind-body connection, we shift how our thoughts and actions interact. Learn how to create positive interactions in our systems so we can better manage our thoughts, emotions, and life stressors – and thus guide our clients to do the same.

Presenter:

Jenie Bennett BSN, RN, HWNC-BC is a California-based Board-Certified Health and Wellness Coach and Registered Yoga Instructor and is passionate about using the powerful combination of coaching and yoga to facilitate a deeper mind-body connection for her clients. In her private practice at Reach Your Wellness, Jenie loves to work with women who are ready to free themselves from anxiety and overwhelm, reconnect with their identity, and live their healthiest lives. She has been a nurse for 15 years with experience in acute rehab and as a Charge Nurse in the Med/Surg/Tele areas. Jenie has lived coast to coast, and loves to travel to new places, seeing the beauty and wonders this world holds. She enjoys homeschooling her 3 children and taking them on adventures. She loves to spend time hiking in nature, fishing with her husband, and reading a good book.

Radiant balance – Illuminating the art of nervous system regulation

As healthcare professionals, nurses play a vital role in supporting the nervous system health of their patients. The nervous system is responsible for regulating bodily functions and maintaining homeostasis, and disruptions to this system can lead to disorders and disease. In this presentation, we will discuss various nervous system regulation measures that nurses can use with their patients or clients to promote health and well-being. These measures may include techniques such as Vagus nerve toning, stress reduction, relaxation techniques, and exercise programs tailored to individual patient needs. Additionally, we will examine the role of gut health in supporting the nervous system health of patients. By implementing these measures, nurses can help their patients achieve optimal nervous system functioning and improve their overall quality of life.

Presenter:

Suzanne Greiner, BSN, RN, NC-BC has been a nurse for 25 years in a variety of healthcare settings. Her passion for Nursing has been reignited through becoming a Nurse Coach. Suzanne brings a unique perspective to coaching that is grounded in her clinical knowledge and personal experience, which empowers her to help her clients uncover root causes of illness, improve their health and well-being, and achieve their life goals. Clinically, she has a zest for learning functional medicine, epigenetics, nervous system regulation, and holistic wellness. As someone who has benefited from personal development, Suzanne is following her soul’s purpose to lead others with her voice and words to empower others to become radically aligned to do the same. She has used the mess in her life to create a message for women in their 40s (and others) in order to help them reach their full potential and find healing and love. Suzanne is a single mother of 3 teenage kids, is an avid hiker in her home state of Colorado, and enjoys meditation.

Holistic Nursing 101

What is holistic practice? How do I become a holistic nurse? This presentation reflects upon the many ways holism can be integrated into the ways we care for ourselves and our patients. Many past attendees have learned they are already bringing holistic practice into their patient care and gain some ideas for next steps. This presentation is required for new OHNA conference attendees.

Healing with the Moon – Bringing an Evidence-Based Archetypal-Astrological Perspective to Nursing Practice

Archetypal cosmology is an emerging academic discipline that honors the value of archetypal astrology as a tool for better understanding ourselves and the world around us. As a holistic healing modality, it is a patient-centered language and framework of holism that offers nurses and other holistic healers a framework of compassion, understanding, and caring by providing a glimpse into a patient’s inner experiences, drives, strengths, needs, and more. In this presentation you will learn the difference between archetypal astrology as a healing modality, and some of the misconceptions behind popular astrology. You will learn how to use the signs of the Moon to support patient-centered care and enhance your own caring presence.

Presenter:

Marina Ormes, BA, RN (ret.), HN-BC (ret.) is a visionary leader and entrepreneur who brings the emerging field of archetypal cosmology together with paradigm-shifting holistic perspectives of healing. She is a published author, transformational wellness consultant, and master astrologer with a 30-year background in astrology and holistic healing. She has been the Director of the Oregon Holistic Nurses Association since 2015, ran a popular program providing guided meditations to work with Moon cycles for ten years, and has been broadcasting daily self-care videos since June 2022. She is the author of Cycles of Healing: Personal Transformation in Relationship to a Living Cosmos and Astrology Heals: The Ormes Method of Transformational Astrology, has a chapter in the anthology Nurse Sparks, and is currently working on research to clarify the use of astrology as an evidence-based healing modality. Four Wisdoms: Thoughts, Emotions, Words, and Body

Nurses are more than the sum of their professional and cultural training and identities. When we pay attention to what is going on inside of us, it can enhance growth, self-awareness, self-management, and lead to exceptional holistic care for others. Participants will learn to note, name, unpack and use their “Self” as revealed in the “Four Wisdoms” of thoughts, emotions, words, and body, which can open them to see what is happening to other human beings as they engage in their Nursing work. Frameworks such as FISH and TURTLE will be shared to show connections between mind, body, and spirit. Participants will feel empowered to engage and walk with others into unknown places.

Presenter:

Arbenit (Ben) Rrustemaj’s life philosophy is to provide a caring, listening presence that nurtures the human soul and to be emotionally available to journey with all walks of life. He was born in Kosovo (Former Yugoslavia) and survived through 3 civil wars, lived as a refugee, and has worked as a pastor in 3 countries with diverse ethnic religious believers. Ben is finishing his Doctorate of Ministry in Healthcare Chaplaincy with Fuller Theological Seminary in California, and is in Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Supervisory Training. He is a Board Certified Clinical Chaplain & Pastoral Counselor with CPSP and the Founder & CEO of CPSP in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Ben works as the Manager of Spiritual Care at Kaiser Sunnyside & Westside Medical Centers in Portland, Oregon, where he taught the first CPE trainings in 2022, is a Medical Ethics Consultant, and serves as a member of the Kaiser NW Regional Bioethics Council. Ben has been blessed with many Nurses in his life - his wife with whom he has 2 daughters, his 3 older sisters are Nurses in Germany, and he was even named Arbenit (Albanian for golden turtle) by a Nurse at birth.

The Nurse’s Role in Holistic, Trauma-Informed, and Person-Centered Care of People Who Use Drugs (PWUD)

Nurses who adopt a holistic, trauma-informed lens are empowered with hope and tangible ways to improve engagement with and treatment outcomes for PWUD. Participants will learn the principles of harm-reduction including how choice of language can reduce discrimination and increase treatment alliance; how medications can reduce use and cravings for opiates, alcohol, and methamphetamine; and how to use these concepts to provide education and advocacy for clients across all health systems and public life.

Presenter:

Tracy Winn, PMHNP-BC, CARN-AP is a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner who specializes in co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. She is an advocate for low barrier and harm reduction approaches in the care of persons with substance use disorder and persons who use drugs. Tracy has worked in research, inpatient withdrawal management, primary care, and specialty behavioral health, and is now the Medical Director of Substance Use and Addiction services at Cascadia Health in Portland, Oregon. She also works part-time at Central City Concern. When not working, Tracy spends time with her family, partner, and friends (mostly fellow nurses!). She loves to be in the mountains, travel to new cites and countries, eat delicious food, and drink delicious coffee.

Impact Nurse Work Environments Positively: Implementing the Pathway to Excellence® Standards

Research repeatedly shows that highly successful patient outcomes are directly related to nurse well-being and a positive work environment. The Pandemic has been extremely taxing on nursing work environments everywhere, resulting in extreme nurse burnout with many leaving the profession for good. As we watch the old systems of work environments fail, it is imperative that new and proven, successful systems be implemented. Nurses must be included in policy-making that impacts their daily practice, be recognized/shown appreciation, and supported in ensuring their own well-being. This presentation will discuss how implementing the ANCC’s Pathway to Excellence® program can create this systems change and promote the enculteration of positive work environment elements that create nurse satisfaction, nursing excellence, and nurse retention.

Deonne Wright RN has more than 50 years’ experience as a nursing leader working in positions from CNA to Nursing Director, with experience in inpatient, outpatient, SNF, and academic settings. She has served as the Magnet & Pathway to Excellence® project leader for the Asante Three Rivers team, and successfully achieved designation in 2012 and re-designation in 2015. She is an author and has her own private practice as a spiritual counselor and energy/sound practitioner.

Pamela Brucks, MN, RN began teaching Yoga in the 1980s. She received certifications from Ananda Yoga Ashram & Osho Multiversity in Pune, India. She taught Yoga & Meditation in hospitals, private studios, Buddhist monasteries, and at Breitenbush. She developed a Yoga/Meditation program for student nurses at a community college. Pamela has worked as an RN in inpatient psychiatry, the Burn ICU, nursing education, and case management. She currently works as a discharge facilitator at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
