    The 2024 WA Flute Competition is set to take place on Sunday, May 5th, at Trinity College in East Perth. This competition promises to showcase the talents of flute players at every level, providing a platform for performers of all skill levels to participate. The event will feature distinct sections tailored to accommodate players from various proficiency levels, ensuring an inclusive and diverse range of participants.

    The competition will be adjudicated by esteemed flautists Andrew Nicholson and Sonia Croucher bringing their expertise and discerning judgment to evaluate the performances. Accompanying the participants during their presentations will be accomplished accompanists Stephanie Nicholls and Rebecca Vouyoucalos.

    In addition to the annual The Kate Jolley Memorial Prize for the most outstanding flute performance at the 2024 WA Flute Competition ($200) there will be cash/gift prizes for the winner of each section as well as trophies, medals and certificates of merit.  Section prizes to be announced soon - watch this space and follow us on facebook: www.facebook.com/waflutecomp

    The 2024 WA Flute Competition sections are:
    (Note: Entry fee includes the performance with the designated competition accompanist for the section booked on the day or you can perform with your own accompanist at your own expense)

    Performance Experiences (no prizes)
    Novice applies to students who have been playing their instrument for 18 months or less
    (A) Novice (3 minutes)  $40 entry fee
    (O) Adult Amateur (5 minutes) $40 entry fee

    Grade Sections
    (B) Grade 1 -  (3 minutes)  $40 entry fee
    (C) Grade 2 -  (3 minutes)  $40 entry fee
    (D) Grade 3 – (4 minutes)  $40 entry fee
    (E) Grade 4 – (4 minutes)  $40 entry fee
    (F) Grade 5 – (4 minutes)  $40 entry fee
    (G) Grade 6 -  (5 minutes)  $40 entry fee
    (H) Grade 7 – (6 minutes)  $45 entry fee
    (I) Grade 8 – (7 minutes)  $50 entry fee

    Recital Sections
    Age as of 5th May 2024
    (J) 10 years and under (8 minutes) $50 entry fee
    (K) 13 years and under (14 minutes)  $80 entry fee
    (L) 15 years and under (16 minutes)  $80 entry fee
    (M) 18 years and under (18 minutes) $100 entry fee
    (N) Open (20 minutes)  $105 entry fee

    Ensemble Sections
    (P) Junior (5 minutes)  $45 entry fee
    (Q) Senior/Amateur (5 minutes)   $45 entry fee

    Piccolo Sections
    (R) Junior (4 minutes)  $40 entry fee
    (S) Senior (6 minutes)    $40 entry fee

    REQUIREMENTS
    A section accompanist will be allocated to sections (A) (B) (C) (D) (E) (F) (G) (H) (I) (J) (K) (L) (M) (N) (O) (R ) and (S) An email with their contact details will be provided after you officially enter. If intending to use the section accompanist, you must contact them immediately and send them an electronic copy of the piano score and to to make a rehearsal time closer to the date as they book up very quickly. 

    Sections (A) and (O) to perform one piece with piano accompaniment of your own choice. There will be no prizes given in these sections. (Note: Entry fee includes the performance with the designated competition accompanist for the section booked on the day or you can perform with your own accompanist at your own expense)  All performers in Section (A) will be awarded a participation medal. 

    Sections (B) (C) (D) (E) (F) (G) (H) (I) to perform one piece from the 2023 AMEB exam syllabus with piano accompaniment within the allocated time limit. The piece may be chosen from either series 3 or series 4 books as well as the manual list. (Note: Entry fee includes the performance with the designated competition accompanist for the section booked on the day or you can perform with your own accompanist at your own expense)

    Sections (J) (K) (L) (M) (N) to perform two contrasting pieces of your own choice with piano accompaniment within the allocated time limit. (Note: Entry fee includes the performance with the designated competition accompanist for the section booked on the day or you can perform with your own accompanist at your own expense)

    Section (N) to perform two contrasting pieces
    Piece 1) Set work “La Bella y...” composed for solo flute by GRANADOS, Marco. Sheet music will be emailed on registration. You can listen to the link below.
    Piece 2) solo flute and piano piece of your choice.



    Sections (P) and  (Q) to perform a piece of music of your choice within the time limit (no other instrumental accompaniment) Please note that more than one player per part is allowed.

    Sections (R ) and (S) can perform arrangements of flute repertoire on piccolo.

    Rules and Guidelines
    There will be a warm up room available for flute entrants only to use before the start time of their section. Please note that the piano is not available in this area and run throughs with your accompanist are not permitted in this area. It is expected that each performer is ready inside the performance space for their section by the time the section starts.

    All performers must use an original copy of music or play from memory.

    A section accompanist will be arranged for each section except (P) and (Q) sections and the performance fee for performing with them on the day of the competition is covered by your entry fee. Please note that at least one rehearsal is strongly recommended and you must contact your allocated section accompanist upon entering to book in a rehearsal closer to your performance date. Rehearsal fees are additional and must be paid directly to the accompanist. Alternatively you can use your own accompanist at your own expense.

    Entrants must perform the piece(s) submitted upon entry.

    Time limits are set to be within the maximum time frame and must not go longer or will result in disqualification

    Only one entry per person allowed in the Grade sections.

    Only one entry per person in the Recital sections.

    Entrants are not allowed to perform the same piece in more than one section.

    When using the the section accompanist, a copy of your piano accompaniment sheet music be emailed to wacmconnect@gmail.com by Wednesday 17th  April 2024

    A copy of the music being performed is required for the Adjudicator and must be emailed to wacmconnect@gmail.com no later than Friday 26th April 2024. It must be accompanied with the completed form attached https://nbca.asn.au/files/apra_amcos_photocopy_form.pdf

    Electronic backing piano accompaniment is not permitted.

    The winners are expected to be present at the 2024 WA Flute Competition Winner’s Concert on Sunday 19th May 2024 at 3pm. Winner’s may be asked to perform the piece from their winning performance. An accompanist will be provided.

    WINNER'S CONCERT
    The culminating event, the Winner's Concert, is scheduled for Sunday, May 19th, 2024. This concert will bring together the outstanding performers from each level, highlighting the best of the competition and allowing the winners to shine in a dedicated showcase. Attendees can expect an evening filled with captivating flute music as the victorious participants demonstrate their talent and artistry.
