2025 ALIGN capacity building seminar: Language Matters: Rethinking Genomics Terminology in Indigenous Research
Event description
Language Matters: Rethinking Genomics Terminology in Indigenous Research
This online presentation and discussion will explore how language used in genomic research can impact Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Drawing on examples from current research and community feedback, we will look at how some commonly used terms carry harmful historical and cultural meanings. But it’s not just about terminology—it’s also about how we think about these concepts, and how we can approach genomic research in ways that are more respectful of Aboriginal ways of knowing, being and doing. Together, we’ll reflect on how to use language as a tool for more ethical, inclusive, and community-informed research.
Amanda Richards-Satour is an Adnyamathanha and Barngarla woman from South Australia and the Community Engagement Coordinator with the Indigenous Genomics Team at the Kids Research Institute. She lives and works on Kaurna Country and brings a deep commitment to ethical, inclusive research practice that respects Aboriginal knowledge and community leadership. Amanda has worked closely with Aboriginal communities, particularly in genomics, data governance, and community-led research engagement. She also has a background in service delivery, having worked across South Australia in roles supporting the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal people.
