2025 ALIGN capacity building seminar series: Introduction to DNA methylation and epigenetics
Event description
Introduction to DNA methylation and epigenetics
This seminar will examine how chemical marks on DNA and its packaging influence when and how genes are used, without altering the underlying genetic code. I will introduce the concept of epigenetics, focusing on DNA methylation as a key regulator of gene activity, development, and disease. Using accessible examples, we will discuss how the same genetic instructions can be interpreted differently across cell types and life stages, and why this matters for health, inheritance, and the environment.
Dr Sam Buckberry is a biologist whose work centres on epigenetics and its applications across genomics, bioinformatics, medical research, and public health. Sam now leads the Epigenetics Program in Indigenous Genomics at The Kids Research Institute Australia. His research focuses on applying epigenetic and genomic technologies together with advanced data analytics to improve chronic disease prediction, prevention, and treatment, while also pioneering approaches to embed Indigenous data sovereignty, privacy, and security into precision health data systems.
This seminar will not be recorded.
Series details
The seminar series aims to provide those with interests in Indigenous Genomics research to improve and develop their knowledge and understanding across the key topics. The seminars aim to provide a broad spectrum of topics across the field. The specific seminar topics will be updated on a regular basis.
