2025 Home Soil Tour morning
Event description
Simple and effective techniques for growing food in our region.
Rachael and Damian grow interesting and super tasty veggies in positive ways!
Their garden is 'beyond organic' and built on interconnected systems that divert waste, build soil, and promote diversity both above and below ground.
They grow all sorts of lovely things, make lots of beautiful compost, and save seed.
After attempting to start seriously growing food about 15 years ago with varying success, they have explored many organic techniques, and have studied No Dig, Permaculture and Soil Biology and producing biology rich compost (through the Soil Food Web School).
Come visit their garden and learn about their journey and techniques!
About the Facilitators
Rachael (a born and bred Canberran) and Damian (who grew up on a traditional sheep/cattle/wheat farm in NSW) met while studying Games Development and currently hold desk jobs in the creative media industry.
Aiming to live closer to nature and more sustainably they moved to a property on the outskirts of Canberra (now Home Soil) in 2009. A desire to live more sustainability, combined with a love of good food, naturally led them to start growing their own - though it initially proved more challenging than anticipated.
What began as a learning curve has become a passion, leading to fascinating insights and a thriving garden. Rachael spends one weekday a week in the garden, with the rest of the work done in their spare time. Through much trial and error, they now eat predominately from their garden and regularly provide produce to local families, organisations and restaurants.
Rachael and Damian are now eager to share their knowledge and experiences and help others grow food with positive outcomes.
