Event description

Before Immersia officially kicks off on 8 September, join us for a rare opportunity to witness the heart of the steppe come to life. In this special pre-festival event, watch a traditional Mongolian ger (yurt) being assembled — no nails, no screws, just centuries of craftsmanship and cultural wisdom.

Come early, ask questions, and learn how each piece fits together to create a portable home that’s weathered winds, wars, and time. It’s not just a structure — it’s a symbol of resilience, hospitality, and nomadic ingenuity.

Set the tone for Immersia with this living installation — a quiet moment of awe before the festival begins.

Note: Date may be subject to change on account of weather conditions.

Don't forget to join us on 12 September at the ger for Day 1 of our mini Naadam (festival) to celebrate all things Mongolian culture, from traditional games like fortune telling and knuckle flicking to music, dancing and wrestling. On Day 2, it's off to Bungendore for an immersive experience of Mongolian horseback archery, standing archery and horseracing!

This event, hosted by the ANU School of Culture, History & Language's flagship festival Immersia, is in collaboration with the ANU Mongolia Institute and the ANU Mongolia Students Society.
