About the LELAN Speaker & Panel Event [5.00-6.30pm]:

As a lead-in to the LELAN Annual General Meeting (AGM) we will be holding a Speaker & Panel Event on eliminating restrictive and coercive practices.

This event will explore the models and approaches that will reduce the mental health system's reliance on restrictive and coercive practices, and move us towards our vision of a world where people experiencing distress retain their dignity, autonomy and human rights. No matter what.

Introductory Remarks: Ellie Hodges, LELAN Chief Executive.

Keynote Speakers:

Dr Chris Maylea, Professor and Acting Deputy Dean @ La Trobe Law School.
Chris will discuss the legal, ethical, and cultural underpinnings of restrictive practices, exploring how 'duty of care' has been misunderstood and how rights-based, peer-led approaches offer viable and necessary alternatives for safety and wellbeing.
Cat Morgan, Lived Experience Leader.
Sharing insights from their lived experience and advocacy.

About the LELAN Annual General Meeting (AGM) [6.30-7.00pm]:

The AGM will provide an opportunity for the LELAN team and Board to showcase work from the 24/25 financial year and launch the 2025 Annual Report.

The AGM will conclude with the following official order of business:

Confirmation of minutes of Annual General Meeting held in December 2024 (found here).
Consideration of the accounts and reports of the Board.
The election of Board members.
Any other business requiring consideration by the association in general meeting.

Information about Speakers and Panel Members:

Dr Chris Maylea (he/him), Professor and Acting Deputy Dean @ La Trobe Law School.

Chris Maylea is a Professor and Acting Deputy Dean at La Trobe Law School, and Associate Director of the Care Economy Research Institute. His research and advocacy focus on mental health law, human rights, and the elimination of coercive and restrictive practices in health and social care. Chris has worked across social work, law, and policy, and is widely published on mental health legislation, trauma-informed legal practice, and supported decision-making. His work centres the voices and rights of people with lived experience and seeks to reimagine systems of care grounded in dignity, autonomy, and justice.

Cat Morgan (she/her), Lived Experience Leader.

Cat is a lived experience advocate, Alt2Su peer facilitator, podcast host and beach enthusiast. She has survived in a mental health system that has at times harmed her recovery, including experiences of psychiatric hospitalisation and repeated inpatient treatment orders. She chooses to share her lived experience in the hope her stories can influence systemic change and spark conversation.

Dr Sarah Moulds (she/her), Associate Professor in law @ University of South Australia.

Dr Sarah Moulds is an Associate Professor in law at the University of South Australia, co-founder and director of the Rights Resource Network SA and South Australia’s representative on the Law Council’s National Human Rights Committee. She is passionate about parliaments and connecting citizens and communities with law makers. In 2022 Dr Moulds was awarded Churchill Fellowship to explore how to empower young people to engage effectively with Australian parliaments. Dr Moulds is actively engaged in local, national and international conversations about the role parliaments can and should play in holding governments to account, and how communities and parliaments can work together to plan for a better future for all of us. She is the Deputy Chair of the International Parliamentary Engagement Network, a group that helps connect people to parliaments all around the world, and a member of the Expert Panel advising the Queensland Parliament on their Human Rights Act.

Danni Bament (she/her), LELAN Chair and Executive Manager Aspire Recovery Connect

Danni has worked for over twenty years in the health and community services sectors. Working across a range of portfolios including public health, homelessness, social housing and domestic violence, Danni has led front line services, as well as community development and strategic policy initiatives.

Most recently Danni has been working in the not-for-profit community mental health sector, delivering psychosocial support services across South Australia. In this role, Danni is excited to be working in partnership with the lived experience community to co-design the design and delivery of services.

Danni is a passionate advocate for human rights and social justice in both her personal and professional life.
