Sustainable House Day is an event presented by Renew that provides the opportunity to explore some of Australia’s most inspiring homes, and learn from the people who designed them, built them, and live in them.

About this home

Built in 1974, this double-brick home was thermally inefficient but had good orientation, no east or west windows, and a white roof. Upgrades include double glazing, ceramic-painted roofing, multiple layers of insulation, and heavy-backed curtains or blinds with roller shutters. A 7kW solar system and solar hot water with gas backup support energy efficiency, while a micro evaporative cooler and gas space heater provide minimal additional climate control. Rainwater tanks supply 76,000L for the garden, toilets, laundry, and dishwasher. The permaculture garden features fruit trees, grapevines, wicking beds, chooks, bird habitats, and native plant corridors to support local wildlife.

Renew is a small not for profit organisation that needs to raise money from ticket sales to cover the costs of hosting this event. In some cases the ticket revenue may also be split with the homeowner.
