Art historian Dr Alison Inglis traces the fascinating history of the sculptor’s house and studio as a distinctive kind of house museum. Drawing on celebrated examples including the studios of Antonio Canova, Auguste Rodin, Alberto Giacometti, Barbara Hepworth and Donald Judd, Inglis explores how these preserved creative spaces can illuminate an artist’s life, practice and legacy.

Turning to the Duldig Studio, Dr Inglis considers how Karl Duldig and Slawa Horowitz-Duldig’s former home and studio has been preserved, and what this setting reveals about their work, lives and creative practice.

The annual Duldig Lecture on Sculpture was initiated in 1986, following the death of Karl Duldig, and in association with the National Gallery of Victoria. The NGV’s director, Dr Eric Westbrook, was instrumental in establishing the lecture series to commemorate the life and work of Karl Duldig and Slawa Horowitz-Duldig. From 2016 to 2019 the lecture was held in collaboration with the University of Melbourne. Since 2020 the lecture has been presented online via zoom webinar enabling access for regional, interstate and international presenters and participants. This is the longest running annual lecture on sculpture in Australia.
