2026 Duldig Annual Lecture: The Sculptor’s Studio as House Museum

Art historian Dr Alison Inglis traces the fascinating history of the sculptor’s house and studio as a distinctive kind of house museum. Drawing on celebrated examples including the studios of Antonio Canova, Auguste Rodin, Alberto Giacometti, Barbara Hepworth and Donald Judd, Inglis explores how these preserved creative spaces can illuminate an artist’s life, practice and legacy.
Turning to the Duldig Studio, Dr Inglis considers how Karl Duldig and Slawa Horowitz-Duldig’s former home and studio has been preserved, and what this setting reveals about their work, lives and creative practice.
The annual Duldig Lecture on Sculpture was initiated in 1986, following the death of Karl Duldig in association with the National Gallery of Victoria. The NGV’s director, Dr Eric Westbrook, was instrumental in establishing the lecture series to commemorate the life and work of Karl Duldig and Slawa Horowitz-Duldig. From 2016 to 2019 the lecture was held in collaboration with the University of Melbourne. Since 2020 the lecture has been presented online via zoom webinar enabling access for regional, interstate and international presenters and participants. This is the longest running annual lecture on sculpture in Australia.

Introduction
The lecture will be introduced by art historian, curator and writer Melinda Mockridge, and followed by a live Q&A via the chat facility. Melinda Mockridge is a professional historian and heritage consultant with training in art history, cultural heritage and education. She is currently working as an advisor and significance assessor of museum and archival collections. Melinda is a curatorial and research associate of the Duldig Studio museum and has had a long association with the Duldig Studio as a programmer, writer, curator and consultant.
Alison Inglis
Dr Alison Inglis’ primary field of research is nineteenth-century British art and design, but she has also a long-standing interest in the history of Australian art museums and art exhibitions. She has extensive experience in the field of curatorial studies, having been for many years the Course Co-ordinator of the Master of Art Curatorship program at the University of Melbourne. She also has participated in the wider Australian arts sector, especially by serving on the boards of several cultural organisations including the National Gallery of Victoria, Museums Victoria, Heide Museum of Modern Art, and the Duldig Studio Museum.
