Description

MSLA invites all members, law students, and community members to join us at the Fifth Annual MSLA Grand Finals Breakfast!

As one of Australia's most beloved sports, the Australian Football League (AFL) culminates every September with its highly anticipated final series, where the top teams compete for the coveted AFL Premiership. But the story of Australian football is no longer told through the men's game alone. The rise of the AFLW has become one of the most significant developments in the code's history.

This year, we turn our attention to the growth of the AFLW and the broader push for inclusion across both competitions. Since its launch almost a decade ago, the AFLW has expanded to a full complement of clubs, drawn record crowds and broadcast audiences, and reshaped what elite football looks like in Australia. That growth has brought a host of legal and ethical questions to the fore: successive collective bargaining agreements negotiating pay, conditions and player entitlements; debates over season length, scheduling and investment; and the professional pathways that determine whether the women's game can sustain its momentum.

Inclusion sits at the heart of these conversations. From Pride and First Nations rounds to accessibility, cultural safety and the representation of diverse communities on and off the field, the AFL and AFLW are grappling with what it means to make the game truly for everyone. Alongside these issues, evolving concussion management protocols, player wellbeing, and questions of sports integrity continue to shape the future of both competitions.

Don't miss MSLA's flagship event, featuring an expert panel of sports lawyers and advocates who play critical roles in the AFL and AFLW's complex legal landscape.

We are also delighted to welcome special guests who will be seated with students, including practicing sports lawyers, current AFL/AFLW players, and MSLA alumni embarking on their legal careers. They will share unique insights and experiences with attendees.

Dress code: Business casual with an AFL or AFLW scarf representing your club of choice.
